I’ve officially begun my juicing quest! I’m the proud new owner of a Big Boss Juicer and after two juices, I’m in love.
My juicing supplies for the week.
I'm so excited to start juicing on a regular basis. My mom is the one who got started on it and has been juicing almost everyday since. She says she can tell a difference in the way she feels overall and can tell a difference on the days she doesn’t juice.
Husband is a meat and potatoes kind of guy so getting him to eat veggies is impossible. IMPOSSIBLE. I'm pretty sure the man has tasted a carrot or any type of spinach one time in his life and kale has never come within a foot of his face. Needless to say, the man needs some vegetable nutrients in his diet and juicing is probably the only way it's going to happen.
Here’s what I used:
2 cups of baby spinach
1 cup of whole leaf kale
3 carrots, chopped into thirds
2 apples chopped into about 1 inch pieces
1 lemon cut into 8th’s (with the peel on)
It yielded about 16 oz of juice, give or take a few. I had read several different takes on leaving the peel on the lemon and decided to try leaving it on for this first one. I have to agree with what I had read, it made it VERY lemon-ey and it had a hint of a bitter aftertaste. Supposedly the rind has a lot of oils in it and leaves a coating in your mouth that contributes to that aftertaste. We had the juice about an hour and a half ago and I’m still tasting lemon! Husband said it tasted like thick lemonade, which I consider a success considering the fact that there were carrots, kale and spinach in it. I also fed the leafy things in the juicer first and added the more solid stuff after because the leafy stuff tend to get stuck and you won’t get as much juice from it.
I’m also trying to keep track of how much I’m spending on fresh produce and how much juice I’m yielding from it. The most common response I hear when I say I want to juice is “Oh, but it’s so expensiveeee..” Well this thrifty girl is going to try and make it as inexpensive as possible! Today’s haul cost roughly $15.00. It bought me 2 bags of spinach, 1 bunch (or whatever they call it) of whole leaf kale, a 3 pound bag of carrots, 3 pounds of lemons, and about 8 small granny smith apples. I’m keeping track of how many juices I get out of it all so that I can report on how much each juice ends up costing!
Please share any tips you have on your juicing adventures! I’d love any advice I can get!
